Indy Holistic Childbirth Education

Join Kelly Shull and Lisa Daugherty for a three part series that prepares birthing people and their support people for a safe, healthy birth by providing current and evidence based information. This Holistic Childbirth Education is different from all other courses in that we will not only take time for lecture, we will spend significant time putting what we have learned into experiential practice with active movement, prenatal yoga, somatic inquiries, relaxation techniques, birthing positions and partner birthing support positions and massage.

This series helps to build confidence, teaches childbirth coping strategies, comfort measures and self-advocacy. Using the best of a variety of different Childbirth Education techniques, inspired by elements of Lamaze, Bradley, Hypnobirth and others, we will explore non-medicated birthing options and also learn about potential interventions. We will explore the research supporting benefits and risks of those possible interventions, as well as guidelines so that birthing people feel informed and empowered to make their own choices during pregnancy and labor and birthing. We are able to provide information that supports the wide variety of childbirth choices that focus on unmedicated or medicated birth in a hospital setting, a birth center, homebirth or freebirth.

Our Holistic Childbirth Education will provide evidence based information and research supporting: allowing labor to begin on it’s own, freedom of movement in labor, labor support, routine interventions, intravenous and restrictions on eating and drinking, routine use of epidurals and liberal use of episiotomy, avoiding the supine position for birth and the value of physiologic pushing, skin to skin and the golden hour after birth, building your birth team and postpartum care.

Research suggests that attendance at a childbirth education class is associated with a decrease in cesarean birth. As pregnant people learn about available options they are able to make more informed decisions, lower their chances for induction and view childbirth as a normal and healthy event. People who have taken an evidence based, independent childbirth education class are more likely to recognize when they’re being pressured to have unnecessary medical intervention as well as recognize and be informed and prepared for any problems that may arise.

This is an inclusive childbirth education series which supports all families including those that identify as, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and single parent families.

There will be lectures and discussions, massage, partner labor support and yoga as well as snacks.

Kelly Shull is a Holistic Childbirth Educator with 12 years of experience teaching prenatal yoga and co facilitates Cityoga’s Prenatal Yoga Teaching Training alongside Lisa Daugherty who is also a prenatal yoga teacher, Doula and Communications Coordinator at Sacred Roots Birth and Wellness Center. Experiential Birth Preparation

Saturday March 1st, 1-3pm

Birthing people are often under prepared for the pushing part of labor, which may contribute to many hours of ineffective pushing, long term pelvic floor damage and weakness, medical interventions or even a cesarean birth. This is due in part to a lack of understanding of and limited preparation for optimal pushing.

In this unique workshop you will learn the essential role of the pelvic floor muscles and how they help rotate the baby and get into birth ready positions. We will review breath and practice positions for effective pushing and how best to prepare the pregnant body for pushing and a full postpartum recovery.

Whether an epidural or unmedicated birth is planned; Lisa D and Kelly will leave you feeling This workshop will focus on knowing your choices, feeling confident in your knowledge, trusting your body, trusting the birth process and honoring your journey. This body, mind, spirit experience is designed to prepare you for the birth of your child by helping you to understand the nature of labor, gather the knowledge you will need, release your fears, know what your choices are, learn how to build a great birth team, and trust your own body’s wisdom. We offer unbiased, evidence based information on the reality of birthing in Indiana. The purpose is to present labor as a normal body process and to offer you the most comprehensive information for a more fulfilling birthing experience.

Prenatal Yoga

Sundays 2:30-4:00pm

Wednesdays 5:15-6:35pm

*Free/Donation Sponsored by Heartland Mindfulness Collective

Prenatal Yoga practice brings balance, space and ease into the body. This mindful exploration of yoga poses will help you feel more relaxed and comfortable, as well as build the necessary strength and stamina you will need to support your changing body and prepare for birth and parenthood. This practice will use postures that focus on the pelvis, pelvic floor muscles and uterine ligaments, encouraging baby into a more optimal birthing position so you can have a more functional and less complicated birth. We will also use postures that help relieve low back pain, swollen feet, sciatica, as well as nausea, heartburn and beyond, including anatomical and hormonal changes.

Come connect with your breath and baby during this sacred time and learn to trust in the body’s ancient wisdom. With a weekly check in we build community and a support network that is so important during this amazing time. We will start with an asana practice and finish with a luxurious supported and guided relaxation.

This class recognizes and is inclusive to all diverse families from single parent families to the LGBTQIA+ community. Family, friends and partners are welcome as we have plenty of blocks, blankets and bolsters to share.

Pelvic Floor Yoga

Workshops & Private Sessions

Let’s delve into understanding anatomy and physiology of the pelvic floor using breath and movement in this experiential pelvic floor yoga workshop for all genders. Kelly will share her depth of knowledge that focuses on stabilizing, strengthening, stretching and lengthening the pelvic floor muscles for a deeper connection to the body and yoga practice. We will begin with an anatomy lecture and discussion, followed by an in depth 75-90 minute experiential yoga asana sequence to awaken your understanding of this area.

A strong and balanced pelvic floor helps to keep the pelvic and abdominal organs healthy and is the foundation for posture, alignment, core strength and breath. Softening, lengthening and strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can help build a foundation for total body health and is the base of your core function. In this workshop we will locate, assess and exercise the muscle groups of the pelvic floor. We will discuss sexual health, mula bandha, kegels, common discomforts and conditions and learn how to utilize the pelvic floor in asana to improve overall health and function. We will also learn how to use props and asana specific to the pelvic floor with handouts for further practice.

Saturday February 1st 11-1pm

This workshop qualifies for 2 CEU’s with Yoga Alliance.
